Independence for Wheeldon off-road motorcycle Centre

Wheeldon Off-Road Centre announces a new fleet of bikes and courses for 2013.

The UK's only permanent indoor and outdoor off-road training facility is delighted to announce its independence on the eve of the Centre's tenth Anniversary.

Off Road Mecca

Wheeldon has earned a great reputation as a mecca for off-road training for all levels of rider from juniors through to novice adults and competition riders.

Located in the heart of beautiful South Devon, Wheeldon has two indoor circuits; a small novice arena and a 30,000 sq.ft main indoor circuit that was used extensively over the winter for pre-season testing by the Arena Cross series competitors.

Now, after relationships with individual manufacturers such as Husqvarna, Suzuki and KTM, Wheeldon has decided to become independent, allowing the venue to be used by the whole industry.

Centre co owner Andrew Savery said:

“Our reputation has grown tremendously over the past ten years. We have established strong working relationships with all of our partners including Michelin, Silkolene, ONE Industries, Pro Clean and Alpinestars. We strive to offer the best in terms of training, safety equipment and clothing for our customers.”

Wheeldon has accepted ONE Industries as their latest partner. The deal with Wheeldon confirms ONE as the preferred helmet supplier to Wheeldon in 2013. Customers will now be able to ride safe wearing the highly acclaimed ATOM range of off-road helmets.

Co-owner Jim Savery said:

“We have assembled a fleet of off-road bikes that we feel caters perfectly for all abilities of rider, from semi-automatic to full competition bikes. For trail riding and adult indoor courses we have the awesome multipurpose KTM Freeride 350, Honda CRF250X and AJP PR4. Club riders can hone their skills on the superb race-bred Husqvarna CR125, and for juniors and novice riders we have a mix of Honda, Suzuki and AJP bikes with different seat heights.”

The small, dedicated team of instructors is both ACU and MCF accredited, offering a very high standard of training.

Junior dirt time

Junior training is a speciality of the instructors at Wheeldon, determined to help bring through the next generation of motorcyclists - whether dirt or road orientated, by teaching them the basics of motorcycling in a fun and informative manner. Over 1500 7-17 year olds pass through the doors each year, paying testament to the training on offer at Wheeldon.

However, it’s not all about riding undercover at Wheeldon. Jim Savery commented:

“We have one of the largest concentrations of green lanes in the South Hams. Trail riding is a big part of our business and we run regular trail rides (either full or half day) from Wheeldon for novice or advanced riders, taking in all manner of lanes from picturesque countryside and coastal jaunts to tricky rock climbs and the infamous river crossing. Trail riding is possibly the best way to take in the fantastic scenic views of South Devon made even better by the recent acquisition of KTM Freerides."

With great local knowledge Wheeldon can cater for any level of rider to ensure that they not only learn from their time in the saddle but have the most fun possible on two wheels. Got your own trail bike? No problem, as Wheeldon can provide a guide to lead you out for an unforgettable day on the trails.

Two new riding courses have been introduced, focusing on full road licence holders who want to start off-road riding. Road to Off-Road, is split between learning basic off-road skills on the indoor arena, with an afternoon trail ride with full instruction. An Introduction to Trail Riding offers a half day of full tuition starting on gentle green lanes, teaching techniques required to start tackling some harder terrain as the ride progresses. It's proven that off-road riding increases your road riding and bike handling skills.

Come rain or shine

As Wheeldon is not limited by external weather conditions, the centre can operate courses all year round. For more information on the latest courses have a look at: or call 01548 821 784.
