Bike of the week - Yamaha FS1E

The famous FS1 was a Yamaha moped of the 1970s and the English version had an E on the end for England = FS1-E thereby fortuitously allowing it to gain the catchy moniker 'Fizzy'.  Those of you who owned one way back when, will probably remember it with love as it provided the zippy exit from a life of buses or Shanks's pony for a generation of 1970s teenagers.

A day out at the Bemrose National Motorcycle Trial

There's a point in the motorcyclists year when optimism begins to filter into the thought processes. It's usually when the calendar clicks over from February into March, and the effect is an expectation that the temperature will climb inexorably towards double figures, and most days will be dry.

It's hard to escape this thinking, even when the meteorological records are set before us. I remember a couple of years back that the first rounds of the British Superbike series were cancelled because it snowed...at Brands Hatch...in April. But like all the devout, nothing will divert us from the path we have come to believe in and practice. And so it was that I found myself dragging a bike out of the garage on St Patrick's Day Sunday; intent on a ride into the Derbyshire Peak District to watch riders tackle sections at the Bemrose National Trial.

Bike of the Week - Honda C90

The Honda Super Cub, AKA C100, 50, Cub, C50, C70, C90, C100EX, Passport etc but for the purposes of this  story the C90, may not initially be much to look at but look again!  Although it may seem humble, it is in fact a fantastic piece of design and has an engine which is a truly great piece of engineering.  Unlikely though it may seem, and although it's only a simple pushrod single, the C90 was the UK's top selling bike right up until the nineties. Designed to do a job, it is the best little workhorse out there and the most popular vehicle of all time.

So here is the story of the most successful motorcycle ever - respect!

Taiwan's motorcycle Grand Riders have gone global

Back in 2007 in Taiwan an interesting phenomenon was born. A group of seventeen Taiwanese elders, with an average age of eighty-one, set off on a motorcycle adventure ride around Taiwan with the object of seeing every part of the country.

They didn't start off as uber fit and healthy seniors who had been riding motorcycles and keeping fit all their lives - on the contrary two of them had had cancer, eight had heart disease, four had to wear hearing aids and all of them had arthritis.

They were not all erstwhile motorcyclists either, some hadn't even ridden before and had to learn in order to go on the trip.

TT motorcycle Legends on TV

Just Three (Fast) Blokes

The voiceover introducing the start of the ITV series TT Legends, being broadcast in half hour slots on Monday nights tells of 'ordinary men doing extraordinary things'. It follows the Honda motorcycle TT Legends Team of John McGuinness, Simon Andrews and Cameron Donald as they tackled their demanding (2012) race programme.

Demanding because they are signed up to compete in the world endurance road race series and, in almost complete contrast, 'real' road races; the NW200, Ireland's largest sporting event, and the the Isle of Man TT races.

The programmes are an insight into the spectacular high risk world of motorcycle racing, and put the three racers personalities out there for us to observe and enjoy, because in one sense they are 'ordinary men'. They come across as humble, unassuming and free of the clich├ęd language beloved of many sports people – think mostly footballers – and commentators. They could be your mates.

Bike of the week - Honda VFR750

Back in the day - before 1986 in fact - Honda’s VF750 was considered to be an unreliable motorcycle bedevilled with camshaft and bearing problems which gave it a pretty negative image. So Honda decided to once and for all put paid to this problem reputation and developed the new Honda VFR 750, a Sportsbike which was so state of the art and so over-engineered that it would never have to cope with the same abuse as its predecessor. The VFR turned out to be such a masterpiece that its reputation still stands today and the VFR is now considered to be one of the most reliable machines ever built.
